Das Boat and why we sail

Post  Algared on Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:51 am

'If we are travelling at dusk, dawn and the twilight hours and will be relying on the current, but that will really put us at the mercy of the river and we found last night that drifting often results in grounding. We want to ensure the oars can be used, if we want to ensure we have steerage we need the oars or sail, and since the sail we be used to help provide som shelter the oars will have to be employed and they may make the difference between capture and escape, or whether or not we run aground. None the less, I was wondering would we be able to rig the shields along the port and starbarb sides that may provide us a little more space?' Algared muses as they consider their course of action. "What ever we do we can ensure to maximize our stowage and keep the craft trim. With one on the tillar two on the oars we would be able to generate more speed if needed and send arrows towards any attempting to stop us.'

'And yes Kugald, I would like to know what the Daas faces, but as jurri says if we saw them pass we would likely only reach the daas in time to tell him what his scouts had already done. But if we find the foe are marching and can inform the Storzar, then if he is able he may be able to march forth and be a hammer upon those attacking the Daas.'

Kugald listens to Algared's suggestions.

"Although travelling with the current will be slower, it will be quiet and low profile. If we raise the sail, we will be much more obvious from shore. A boat without a mast is low to the water and harder to see in twilight. If we use the oars, then we will make noise, which will be easier to hear than if we are just drifting along. By travelling at dusk and dawn, we will be able to see...somewhat...and that will allow us to steer around obstacles. But you are right, we should keep the oars at the ready and someone on the bow with the pole to help if we spot trouble and need to take action. Having a couple people ready with bows is also a good suggestion."
