Family and Friends

Post  GM on Thu Oct 27, 2011 6:11 am

33: Military/Militia – Friend (64)
Orn Serewyn – grandson of Ragnar Serewyn

Orn Serewyn is one of Meldun’s closest friends growing up, was the troublemaker of the three boys. Orn was normally the one that came up with the ideas that ended up with boats let loose into the river, sheep set free from their fences, and shop owners wondering where they put their tools. As an adult, he still doesn’t take himself too seriously, which Meldun appreciates, as it keeps him from taking himself too seriously, as well.

76: Guildsman (journeyman) – Friend (68)
Hemdor Serewyn - Son of Weaponcrafter Kantha Serewyn

Hemdor, Orn, and Meldun were close friends growing up. Hemdor was the one that found Meldun trapped under the knarr by Raynolr Janorl. After that incident, Hemdor and Orn made it their business to ensure Raynolr never bothered Meldun again. To this date, Meldun still does not know what they did.

75: Guildsman (journeyman) – Enemy (07)
Raynolr Janorl – Son of Mercantyler Thifar

Every village has it’s bully, and Raynolr Janorl is Marby’s. Raynolr regularly tormented Meldon, who was always a bit smaller than everyone else, either shoving, tripping, or just going out of his way to harass the young boy. Meldon did everything in his power to avoid Raynolr, until the day Raynolr and his friends trapped Meldon under an overtuned knarr that was brought on shore for repairs, where he was stuck until the next day when Hemdor found him. Meldon still hasn’t fully recovered from the incident, and Raynolr still harbors resentment to Meldon for what Hemdor and Orn did.

92: Other (GM Option) – Close Friend (81) (best friend)
Erka Serewyn – Harbormaster

Meldun always looked up to Erka Serewyn. Even as a young boy, she was someone he kept his eyes on. Although, at that age, it was because of her size and bulk that he and his friends would make fun of her, but as he grew older, he grew more fond of her. It was her dedication to her life and her job that really helped Meldun follow his own path to become one of Sarajin’s priests. Upon completion of his studies, Erka was one of the first people he visited to celebrate.

13: First Cousin, Aunt or Uncle – Acquaintance (31)
Thanik Jarlaka – Son to Bjan Jarlaka

While Thanik is only an older cousin to Meldun, he always treated Meldun as a younger brother, regularly taking him under his wing. But as Thanik’s father grew older, Thanik grew more distant, involving himself in clan politics more than social fun with his little cousin. Meldun still cherishes the memories of spending time with his cousin, and misses him fondly.

Being the first born son of a Priest of Sarajin, Meldun had a lot of expectations put upon him before he even drew his first breath. Imagine the let down his father felt when his first born entered the world smaller and more frail than most, and who’s odd colored eyes haunted most who looked upon them. So much so, the local physician thought the young life wouldn’t survive to feel the first warm summer day, lucky to even reach the dawn of the following day. The next morning, expecting their son to lie lifeless in his blankets, Meldun proved the physician wrong. Slowly, slower than most his own age, Meldun continued to grow, his heart and mind never caring what size his body was. By the time he reached the age to begin his training, Meldun was a full six inches shorter than his clanmates of the same age, and his parents were quickly showing more favor to his younger brothers and sister, who were each outgrowing him in their own turns.

Walking alone along the river one afternoon, Raynolr, the thran bully along with his co-horts, spotted the small boy, chased him down, beat him up, and trapped him under an overturned knarr. Meldun was stuck under the knarr for almost a full 24 hours until his friends found him. While under the knarr, Meldun prayed constantly to Sarajin, swearing his life to his God, if only he could live. True to his word, Meldun poured himself into his studies.

By the time he was finished with his studies, Meldun’s growth spiritually and mentally was finally being matched with his physical body. While still smaller than most, he was able to oft hold his own in sparing with all but the most dedicated of fighters in the clan. Sadly, this growth did nothing to win favor of his family, deeming him less than a stellar son.

Longing for the respect of his father and clan, Meldun quickly volunteered for any and all missions that he thought would show his courage. Often traveling the great distances to other thrans. Several times he proved himself with delivering messages and news from his clan to others in and around Orbaal. His travels became so great that a shield-maiden was assigned to him for the longer journey’s.

On one such journey in the summer of 719, Meldun, along with his shield-maiden escort, Bryndis, heard the distinct sounds of combat in the distance. Following the noise, Meldun and his companion Bryndis saw a hulk of a man being attacked by many gargun. While he was holding his own, the numbers were not in his favor, and several cuts could be seen even across the distance. With an opportunity for battle, the two charged in, slaying several of the foul beasts.

Doing their best to heal the young man, they patched up his wounds. Pulling a red apple from his pack, Meldun instructed the man to eat it all, including seeds and stem. By the next morning, most of the wounds were completely healed, and even the worst of his cuts were well on their way to mending. Grateful for saving his life, Bjorn swore his life to protecting Meldun along his journey.

Not long after, Meldun, Bryndis, and Bjorn were sent to deliver a gift to clan Baalson in Chybisa. Once there, they learned of preparations for war in Menglana. Seeing opportunity for themselves, the three agreed to join one of the ships heading to the mainland.
