From the main post Eijryk was looking at wounded. I read in various places about using garlic or onion soup to detect severity of stomach wounds. If the guts had been pierced the physician could smell the soup as it passed through. There was usually little that could be done and infection would finish the patient off, but I guess some must have survived. There would be a fair bit of coup-de-grace-ing going on I suspect on the badly wounded.
